I hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and break. I am looking forward to seeing those smiling faces on Tuesday.

There are times when I dislike winter, but I will say January is my favorite in third grade.

Enjoy your last few days of break!

 December Fun

Third grade has been very busy! I am not sure where the time is going, but being at the end of 2023 is crazy!

In math we have been working on mad minutes, area, perimeter, and  Christmas math. Third graders are having trouble remembering simple addition and subtraction facts. It would be great if they could practice at home. We usually start practicing multiplication facts in January. Flash cards are a great gift!

In reading they continue to work on their buddy reading and journaling. I have never tried this with third grade and they are doing an awesome job. We are also coming to the end of The Chocolate Touch.

All third graders enjoyed The Christmas Carol play last week. They had great questions at the end of the play.

Next week will learn about different holiday traditions and have our pancake breakfast!

I hope you all have a relaxing weekend!

DECEMBER

I am not sure how it is December?! The weeks and days are flying by. I don't always love the holiday rush, but I do love the month of December at school. I love the excitement in the kids and all the fun activities we get to do along with learning!

We started pair reading this week and they LOVE it. They are reading a book with a buddy and journaling after each chapter. It is so cool to see them reading together and talking about what they have read. We are also reading The Chocolate Touch as a class. We are doing comprehension activities to go along with our reading. It great to listen to their perspective of what is happening in the book.

On Friday we had a Grinch day! We wrote poetry, listened to the story, did a directed draw, and ate Grinch chocolate. It was a great day!

Here are some photos from our last few weeks:

We had so much fun doing community service. The Intermediate Wing made center pieces and ornaments for the Senior Center and than made a delivery. We also walked in the Davis Woods and made decorations for the Holiday Concert.

We started a new science unit on traits and selection. The had to sort fruits into groups they thought they belonged in.

Happy Weekend!

It seems like our weeks are flying! I am not sure how we are half way through November.

We finished our social studies simulation on Thursday. This is one of my favorite units and the kids loved it. It is such a fun way to learn about our history and how history can change as we know more information. It is a great way to learn to work in a group and listen to all ideas. I must say they did an awesome job. It is fun to watch them work through different thoughts and ideas.

We started our third math unit on Tuesday. We have started with fractions, so anytime you can work that into your conversations at home would be great. Fractions are a hard concept for third grade. I would also encourage you to practice addition and subtraction facts at home. We have started doing mad minutes before our math lessons.

I am changing our reading groups from now until Christmas break. When we come back after bread we will continue independent reading, but add partner reading and journaling. We have also started The Chocolate Touch. We are reading together as a class while learning new vocabulary and answering more

finishing some of the books we are have started and also we will be starting a personal narrative! I am excited to see what they will write about!

On Monday and Tuesday we will be doing some community service with grades 2 and 4. The children will be making center pieces and an ornament for each resident at the Veazie Senior Center. We will deliver them on Tuesday afternoon. We will also be walking to the Davis Woods to clean up the path. Please make sure your kids come prepared to walk outside!

I want to thank you for sending in pies and juice for our little feast!

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a relaxing break!

 Third Grade

Balloons Over Broadway Project

with Mrs. Shannon

Here's the link for the third grade Balloons Over Broadway project. First we read the book Balloons Over Broadway, the true story of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Next, they created blue prints of their design idea and labeled the materials they would need. (I attached a few photos of that, too!). Finally, they began building their balloon using recycled materials and we used Canva to snap a photo using the background remover tool.
