Happy Vacation!

We had a wonderful week in third grade!

Third graders finished unit 5 in math and had their test on Friday! They have worked very hard on fractions and multiplication facts. Please quiz your kids on their facts every night. They are checked every Friday! After vacation Miss Cloutier and I will do some team teaching in math.  I think it will be fun and very beneficial to our students.

This week in social studies the kids finished researching explorers. We did some information writing in the form of a journal entry. They wrote their letter and then typed their final draft in the computer lab. Miss Cloutier is working on making them look like they are aged...third graders were pretty excited about this and did an awesome job. After vacation they will finish their study on explorers by making a timeline! Our next unit will be a science unit on Social and Group Behaviors.

Our next reading study will be on Folktales and Fables. I am pretty excited to share with the kids what we will be doing! I think they will enjoy this unit!

The highlight of the week was Valentine's Day! We had fun making our boxes with 4th and 5th grade. On Friday we opened our Valentines and enjoyed popcorn and a movie, of our choice, together! We love the community we are building with our kids!

Here are some pictures of our fun:

Third grade was excited to start their unit on European Explorers. We will be focusing on 4 explorers. Our unit started out with 4 stations where third grade looked up answers to who, what, when,  why, and where questions. The students used, computers, books, and short videos to find facts. They also completed a KWL chart. This week third graders will explore informative writing and timelines.
Here are some pictures of third grade hard at work!

READING

Third grade is reading up a storm...that was definitely true for Friday. Our mini-lesson this week was on "main idea." We made posters representing a main idea and then they guessed what each others poster was about...Maine Idea! They loved it and did an AWESOME job.

I gave the kids an example poster...mine was making brownies. We tied my main idea into a math lesson. On Friday we made brownies and used our measuring, fraction, and multiplication skills we have been learning!

On Friday, during the storm, third grade and Mrs. Humphrey were reading up a storm...check out how third grade does reading!!!

I love everything about these pictures..the excitement when they find a great book, the reading groups, the comments made when they read something funny, the conversations about books, the skills they are learning that will last a lifetime, and the quiet in the room as we all READ!!

We are still looking for empty cereal boxes. On Tuesday we will be making Valentine boxes with grades 4 and 5 so any help will be great!

I hope you all had a great weekend!

Third Grade Reading

Just a quick reading plug:

Third grade has been busy reading in guided reading groups and from their book boxes. Even if your child does not have reading homework they should have a book they are reading at home. Reading every night will make them a stronger reader and writer!

Happy Reading!
