January 15, 2018

With all the snow days and vacation I have not updated our days in school! It was very nice to have a FULL week of school last week. I feel like we are now back into our routine.

Here is an update on what is happening in our class:

Math
We will finish unit 4 this week. It has been fun learning about area and perimeter. We have also done lots of work on multiplication facts. As a class, we are going to do an ice cream sundae challenge. When they master each set of multiplication tables they will earn a piece of an ice cream sundae. Once we have all earned our pieces we will have an ice cream party. It would be great if they could practice at home!

Reading
Hopefully, you have heard we are reading, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Third graders are enjoying this book! I am using this as a read aloud, but we are doing many activities as we go along. This is a great way to practice comprehension skills, characterization, predicting, vocabulary and so much more to help strengthen reading skills.

We are also doing guided reading. I have several groups and we are reading a book together. I love reading with them and having great book talks. These books will not come home, as it is hard to keep everyone on track. Please use the reading log as their reading homework!

Writing
In the next few weeks we will be working on poetry. Third graders will also work on opinion writing. We are also working on sentence structure and exciting vocabulary in our writing.

Science
Third grade started a unit on
Weather and Climate last week. We learned about the different types of clouds and what kind of weather they may bring. This week we will talk about the difference between weather and climate. We will also use the book, "Snowflake Bentley" to learn about snow. I am also going to try using "mentor sentences" from the book to help us write stronger sentences.

Alice in Wonderland
I am sure you have heard about our musical. The weather has certainly put us a bit behind, but the kids are doing an awesome job! We will be so excited to present it to our audience soon! When we have settled on a date I will let you know!

The highlight of our week was our new student...Hazel! She is a great addition to our class and we are so excited she joined us!

I hope you have had a wonderful long weekend!
