Happy Thanksgiving

I am sitting here on Thanksgiving morning thinking about how lucky I am to be working at such a great school! I am thankful that I get to teach such wonderful children and work with great families!

This week was short, but very busy and lots of fun. We finished our Plymouth Colony Simulation and we are all a little sad it had to end. We also finished our "good fit" books in reading. In November, we will read books by Kate DiCamillo. We are going to read her books and compare them to each other. Her books have a wide variety of levels and topics so it will be fun. We will also be learning about different types of poetry and write some of our own!

Her are some highlights of our week:

We made pumpkin bread and banana bread!

The boys are the best chefs!

We played a game that the Pilgrim children played called, "The Bowl Game." They had a blast!
Sarah and Kris were very serious about their game!

Halle and Rachel planning their strategy!

Thomas and Tristan tested their skills!

All you need are almonds, toothpicks, and a bowl!

Nick Dylan, Camden, Keegan, and Thomas played a pretty competitive game!

Third grade then enjoyed a feast provided by all of our very generous families! Thank you all so very much!

So many choices!

And there were seconds!

Happy Feasting!

I think I am full!

OHHHH Rachel!

As you can see we had a great 3 day week! Again, thank you all for being so generous!
IMPORTANT:
*Don't forget to checkout the online auction.
**Please make sure you attend the Public Meeting on December 1st! We need to show our support for our WONDERFUL school and the BEST children ever!

Have a wonderful vacation and enjoy your families!

We love third grade!

This week flew! We have had so much fun with our simulation! It is great to feel the excitement in the air. This week we grew corn, built houses, traded beads and trinkets. We lost some colonists along the way but things are looking up! We will finish our simulation with a small feast.

Working on building houses:

Third graders are doing an awesome job with their "good fit" books. We conference daily and have followed up with a turkey book report. I am very please with their choices and love listening to their conversations.

We also did a 3,4, 5 wing project on Monday. The students listened to "The Giving Tree," which was read by Shel Silverstein. If you have not read this book check it out! They then wrote about a person that is giving to them and how they could be more giving.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Third Grade Update

Wow, things have been busy in third grade and in the Humphrey household. As you all know my son got married last weekend. It was a wonderful weekend and we are all beyond thrilled. Now I feel like I have some free time on my hands...sort of :)

We have had a great few weeks. Last week was a two day week, but still felt like we accomplished so much! The kids finished their unit 2 test in math and I was very pleased with their work. I am encouraging them to go back and check their work to look for mistakes or things they might want to add to. This is good practice as they get older.

In reading they are reading, "good fit," books. They were happy to pick their own book. I meet with them daily to ask them questions and listen to them read. As they finish they will complete a book report and share it with the class.

Social Studies has been the BIG hit! We are doing a simulation of the first year at Plymouth Colony. The kids are having a blast! They get to practice working as a team, decision making, leadership skills, writing, and being very creative!

We are also having fun writing poetry! Last week we wrote "Concrete Poetry" about trees. They added them to their background that was made with craypas! They are beautiful!

Here are some pictures of third grade in their ships:

Third Grade News

Red Ribbon Week, Spirit Week, Halloween, and the Halloween Hullabaloo...I don't think I have to tell you that third grade was a very busy place!

It was a wonderful week! It was so fun to see the kids come to school all dressed and ready for the theme of the day. I don't think I have ever seen so many kids participate in Spirit Week...We ARE proud to be part of the Veazie Community School!

I want to thank Mrs. Smart, Mrs. Hileman, the student council, and all the staff that helped with the Halloween Hullabaloo.  It was a great success and so fun to see all of our kids and community having fun together! We do love our kids!

Third graders finished painting and making posters for our landform presentation this week. I am so proud of them! On Thursday, we had centers with landform painting, rocks and minerals exploration, and edible landforms...it made learning so much fun!

Fun Exploring Rocks and Minerals

Creating an edible landform!

Third Grade Picasso's!
We ended our week with some Halloween fun with 4th and 5th grade! It was great decorating cookies and watching E.T. as a wing! Thank you to all the parents and Mr. Hileman for helping with all our yummy cookies, decorations, and juice boxes!

Next week we will have our Unit 2 test in math. In reading all students will be reading a "good fit" book and we will start Jamestown/Plymouth Colony in social studies.

Next week third grade will have a substitute on Thursday and Friday. I will be celebrating the marriage of my son and his fiance!

Hope you all had a great weekend!
